What is salsa dancing?

Salsa dancing is a partner dance that originated from Latin America and involves impressive turns for leaders and followers as well as a lot of body movement. It’s great to burn calories, as well as toning your muscles and joints.

Salsa is a partner dance. You have one leader and one follower who eachplay an equally important role. Two leaders dancing together would bring chaos on the dance floor!

You can also dance salsa alone, doing your steps by yourself. This is called Salsa Suelta

Cuban Salsa / Casino

Cuban salsa is a street dance danced all over the bars and streets of Cuba. Cuban salsa, also called Casino, is a partner dance which takes its origins from Son Cubano and Afro-caribbean Rumba. Cuban salsa is a circular dance characterised by movements where the dancers travel around the dance floor. It is first and foremost an happy and jovial dance.

What does salsa dancing involve?

You do not need anything to start. No partner are needed. If you are learning, join our group beginner’s classes or take a private dance lesson. There is usually many people there, and during the class the teacher will make all the dancers rotate. You will be able to meet and dance with various dancers!

What is this stuff about leads and follows. Are their specific roles are in salsa?

Traditionally, salsa has been danced in male-female pairs, with the male leading and the female following. However, the salsa scene has long since evolved. It’s now common to see same-sex partners or women leading in salsa classes or social dances. The best approach is to focus on the skills each role demands – leading is about clear communication and anticipating movements while following requires attentiveness and adaptability.

Read our Code of Conduct and Dance Etiquette guidelines.

The advantage of attending these courses is the opportunity for repetition – every week repeating what was learned before and then building on it – as well as having more time to focus on technique. This is a great way to develop and improve your dancing. Block courses are run on an ad hoc basis in a variety of formats and styles, so keep an eye out for announcements throughout the year.

People can learn a lot quicker in a private class setting with one-to-one teaching, and this can be quite cost effective for a small group. Cost is $40 per hour for one teacher for up to 2 people. Students will need to provide their own venue, or negotiate something with the teacher. Contact Us for more details.
