Bachata Moderna Boot Camp

Our instructors Andrew and Katrina will be running 2 hour block classess starting Sunday 18 May 2025 at Encore Dance Studio, Federal Street, North Hobart.

Bachata moderna was actually born outside of Dominican Republic. This is the modern version of bachata danced all over the world, which has influences from salsa and elements of Dominican bachata. With Bachata Moderna your dance won’t be from side to side as the traditional bachata is, instead, you will move and flow on the dance floor with much ease! We also include fast turns and dips which aren’t that common in Dominican style. Bachata moderna is a great style to enjoy bachata even if you don’t like to dance in a sensual way.

Its name comes from the staccato footsteps of the dancers. Unlike most dances, the Cha Cha Cha is danced offbeat and has a simple procession of foot movements– three quick steps, two slow steps, pause. Like the Mambo and the Rumba, the Cha-Cha-Cha is a very fluid dance with a lot of pelvic motion.
Sat 1.15pm Cuban Salsa (Casino) (Intermediate) : Learn some new turn patterns and techniques to greatly improve your salsa. In Cuba, a popular dance known as Casino was marketed abroad as Cuban-style salsa or Salsa Cubana to distinguish it from other salsa styles when the name was popularized in the 1970s. Dancing Casino is an expression of popular social culture in Cuba and many Cubans consider casino a part of their social and cultural activities centering on their popular music.
Sat 2:20pm Rudea de Casino (Open): Rueda de Casino is a style of Cuban Salsa where several couples dance in a circle guided by a single leader calls out the moves while the pairs in the circle execute them. There are dozens of spins, each one has a name and many have hand signals. Sunday: Encore Dance, 58A Federal Street, North Hobart

Sun 12:05pm Son Cubano (Open): Cuban son dance is a social dance that is typically performed to the music of the son Cubano genre. It is a popular partner dance that originated in Cuba in the early 20th century and has since spread to many other parts of the world. The dance is characterized by its smooth and flowing movements, using the space to travel. This gives a very ballroom dancing feel to the dance. Smooth and flowing movements are meant to reflect the rhythms and melodies of the music. The basic steps of the dance involve a combination of side-to-side and back-and-forth movements, often accompanied by turns and spins.
Sun 1:15pm Dominican Bachata (Open): The Dance Event of the Year. Afternoon Workshops and Party with Hamish Fernando & Alissa Cleo

Hamish Fernando (Sydney) & Alissa Cleo (Agua! Cuban Dance Perth) will lead an afternoon workshop series that will focus on body movement, musicality, and the ability to add pauses and playfulness to your dance.

While most classes focus on specific figures, we want to empower students to feel the music and dance in between the complex figures. When we can enjoy and be creative with our movement in each moment, every dance can become a great experience even when you are just doing the basic steps. Let’s play and connect!
